Deep Rising
Don’t Mine What’s Mine

Brief
Create global awareness of the terrifying dangers of deep-sea mining in the planet’s last pristine wilderness, and stop it before it starts.
Insight
People protect what they feel belongs to them.
Strategy
Leverage the tension in international law: the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea defines the deep seabed as the “common heritage of humankind,” to be “held in trust for future generations.” It doesn’t belong to governments, corporations or mining companies. It belongs to all of us. It is our collective birthright.
Idea
Don’t Mine What’s Mine. We turned the issue of deep-sea mining into the world’s largest ocean dispute. Through a world-first digital platform, deeprising.com. We used blockchain technology to divide the threatened mining area into 8.17 billion claimable GPS coordinates, representing every human on Earth. Anyone could claim their “birthright” plot in minutes, receiving a personalised NFT Birthright Certificate recorded on a carbon-positive blockchain.
